Lockheed Martin, EMC to develop tech projects in Israel

Defence contractor Lockheed Martin Corp and data storage equipment maker EMC Corp said on Sunday they plan to jointly invest in advanced technology projects at a tech park in southern Israel.

The companies intend to jointly develop partnerships with Israeli industry, government and academic institutions in the city of Beersheba to explore research and development projects in cloud computing, data analytics and cyber technologies.

Their combined initial investment of $1 million will establish a vehicle through which EMC and Lockheed Martin can develop new offerings for the companies to bring to market.

Under the arrangement, Lockheed Martin and EMC will identify a series of development opportunities that can be contracted to Ben-Gurion University, which is in Beersheba, and other experts.

"We expect this collaboration with Lockheed Martin will help EMC continue to rapidly accelerate our important research and development," said Orna Berry, general manager of EMC's Israel centre.

EMC employs more than 1,000 people in Israel and has invested billions of dollars through the acquisition of nine Israeli companies, various investments in Israeli technologies, and the establishment of sales and R&D centres.

Unit now, Lockheed Martin's presence in Israel was primarily focused on aerospace and defence endeavours.

"Our goal is to foster applied research and continued growth in Israel's technology sector," said John Evans, Lockheed Martin's vice president of international engineering and technology.

So how do you build midrange storage that can deliver up-to thousands of virtual machines per array, supporting mixed application workloads while keeping costs down? On the server side, Intel is driving performance with multi-core technology. Our challenge was to design a storage solution that exploits multi-core technology to unlock the full power of flash while leveraging the cost benefits of near-line disk drive capacities.

One approach has been to add flash drives to a traditional HDD based array. While this approach has delivered some benefits, the much more comprehensive and correct approach is a clean sheet design that’s optimized for flash and adds HDDs. This provides the best of all worlds – highest performance, lowest latency and lowest $/GB. Which is exactly what we did with the new VNX. We also developed MCx (dynamic multicore optimization) software that distributes all VNX data services across all cores—up to 32. This takes full advantage of the latest Intel multi-core technology.

NAS Performance
A new SPECsfs2008_nfs result was just published for a VNX8000 system resulting in 580,796 Ops/Sec (Overall Response Time = 0.78 msec). Compare this to the previous result of 497,623 Ops/Sec (Overall Response Time = 0.96 msec) using a VNX VG8 gateway with four arrays. What is significant is that the new VNX systems beat the old number with a single array – which is really what an end user would purchase…with a dramatic reduction in overall latency.

These file performance improvements are especially important for transactional NAS applications – VMware over NFS, Hyper-V over CIFS, Oracle over NFS – that require high-performance transactions at the lowest latency. The new VNX system has reduced NAS latency by up to 60%.

Virtualization Performance
Virtualization performance is also critical for midrange storage. The previous generation of VNX systems supported 1,100 VMs—the new VNX system supports 6,600 VMs—a 6X improvement. But performance is only part of the story. According to a recent Wikibon study on VMware storage integration, the VNX was named #1 in VMware integration in each of the three categories – general, block-only and file storage – for the 3rd year in a row.


Mixed Workload Performance
A recent Demartek study showed the new VNX running a virtualized mixed workload of SQL OLTP and Oracle OLTP with a total of over 735K IOs/sec. The VNX system also delivered over 300K SQL IOPs concurrently with over 10GB/s bandwidth for Oracle data warehousing. In addition the study shows how the addition of XtremSW Cache 2.0 improved performance with 31% more IOPS, and more importantly, 65% lower latency.

These powerful new arrays are available today, and are supported by EMC VSPEX (and the soon to be announced VCE vBlock systems).

IDC: EMC Tops Strong 1Q Disk Storage Market

Despite the flooding in Thailand that affected hard drive manufacturing, the worldwide total disk storage system market posted a healthy 6.8 percent increase in year-over-year revenues during the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12) says IDC. And EMC was the big winner.

Revenues nearly reached the $8 billion mark, according to the research firm's Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker. Shipped disk storage systems capacity grew 20.8 percent over the year-ago period, accounting for 6,037 petabytes.

External disk storage systems experienced similar gains with year-over-year growth of 7.1 percent and nearly $6.0 billion in revenues. The floods did, however, take a bite of out of one segment of the market, reports IDC senior research analyst Liz Conner.

"Entry-level systems (ASV of less than $25,000) were hit hardest owing to their reliance on SATA and near-line SAS drives, which experienced price increases due to the Thailand floods," said Conner in a company release.
Nonetheless, the disk storage market continues to expand. "However, strong overall growth in emerging regions and the slowdown in price per gigabyte ($/GB) erosion helped the market post year-over-year growth."
EMC Rules, Again

Among vendors, EMC was No. 1 in terms of revenue and market share. The storage giant took home a 29 percent share of external disk systems revenue for a total of $1.7 billion. NetApp follows with $841 million for 14.1 percent share, and IBM claimed 11.4 percent of revenues with $678 million.

Both EMC and NetApp posted double-digit, year-over-year revenue growth of 14.4 percent and 11.1 percent, respectively. IBM suffered a slight 0.5 percent drop.

In terms of the total disk storage system market, EMC leads again with 21.7 percent of the market, and HP comes in second with an 18.2 percent share and more than $1.4 billion in revenues. IBM again claims third place with 14.9 percent market share on nearly $1.2 billion in revenues.
High-End Storage Stumbles

IDC's figures indicate that in 1Q12, midrange storage arrays were the sweet spot. According to Amita Potnis, Storage Systems senior research analyst for IDC, high-end storage system sales are in decline.

"The high-end storage segment (ASP $250,000+) remained flat year over year and declined 13.0% sequentially in the first quarter of 2012. The high-end segment grew significantly in 2010 and 2011 owing to the loosened storage budgets after the economic crisis of 2009," states Potnis.

And the outlook isn't getting any better. "IDC believes that the softened growth in the high-end segment this quarter is reflective of what will be a long-term trend," says Potnis.
